DTLA: Happy Hour at Rivera

Standard
Jeremy Lake, The Minty Hot Bartender 2012

Jeremy Lake, The Minty Hot Bartender 2012

I recently discovered Rivera now has happy hour. When the restaurant first opened, they famously didn’t have discounted cocktails or food for the hungry office workers. They’re fairly close to LA Live, the Convention Center and Staples. I wouldn’t want to discount my food or booze either. Then Rivera started doing reverse happy hour and that seemed to work at catching the folks leaving the nearby entertainment.

Luckily they started happy hour about five months ago. It only took me that long to figure this out. I was looking at their lunch menu online (which hasn’t changed much) and noticed the happy hour menu. Say what? I was there that same week. Okay, it was a week later. But I have made it a semi-regular thing bringing in my coworkers. I needed to find a new happy hour/ after-work hang since I am not frequenting my other two haunts at the moment.

Beverage Director (and the Minty Hot Bartender 2012) Jeremy Lake along with Julian Cox put together the cocktails. The following is a mix of what’s currently available but catch these soon because they’re gearing up for Spring menus soon.

arepas with BBQ shrimp

arepas with BBQ shrimp

The food for happy hour includes stuffed olives, arepas with BBQ shrimp, a short ribs tamailii, the always delicious tortillas florales and more. All for $5 a pop. I’m currently obsessed with the arepas and tamalii (that’s how they spell it).

daiquiri

daiquiri

Happy hour cocktails include classics like daiquiri and Gold Rush. The Rivera’s Cup– a take on a Pimm’s cup is also very popular with tequila and cucumbers. There’s also a few beer and wine options.

tamalii short ribs

tamalii short ribs

Mushrooms add to the already great flavor of the tamalii short  ribs.

Saved by Basil

Saved by Basil

Saved by Basil is already off the list but I’m always curious about Dimmi based cocktails. The Italian grappa lends itself well to fruity concoctions. Plus, I love basil. My alter ego is The Basil.

La Ofrenda

La Ofrenda

On the regular cocktails list, La Ofrenda is one of my favorites with housemade blood orange chips and foam. The tequila based cocktail is a showy cocktail but still has a lot of substance to back it up. I was sitting at the bar before a Lakers game and so many people were intrigued by this drink. Sure, the Barbacoa and Blood Sugar Sex Magic are still probably the best sellers but I have a feeling La Ofrenda will go far. At least until the end of the blood orange season.

Autumn Sour

Autumn Sour

Whenever I want to go light, I ask for a sour. The Autumn Sour is a nice one.

Flor de Jerez

Flor de Jerez

I love that Rivera has a whole section of sherry cocktails right now. The Flor de Jerez is my pick at the moment.

Monte Carlo

Monte Carlo

Rivera is probably known for its wide selection of tequilas but it also has a strong whiskey selection as well. Get classics like the Monte Carlo here.

Chet Baker

Chet Baker

Or if you like rum, the Chet Baker from the happy hour menu is also a deal.

Carroll Gardens

Carroll Gardens

One of these days, I’ll have to put together my Manhattan Project post. I’ve been on a hunt trying all the different Manhattan variations. Carroll Gardens may not be as well-known as a Little Italy or a Red Hook but it has it’s place in my heart.

Culver City: Happy Hour at Bigfoot West

Standard
Bigfoot Lodge West

Bigfoot West

Bigfoot West is one of those places I’ve been to a bunch but just never got around to writing about.  I’ve also been to their Eastside sister bar, Bigfoot Lodge, a bunch as well. It’s always reliable for happy hour and at Bigfoot West, you can even order empanadas from the bar until about 8:15 or so.

Several years ago, there was a movie with Jim Carrey and Zooey Deschanel called Yes Man. There’s a scene at Bigfoot Lodge. Rumor has it, a set was built imitating the bar and when the movie shoot was done, they turned the fake Bigfoot into Bigfoot West. Is it meta or is it genius and the ultimate use of reusing materials? Either way, Bigfoot West seems bigger, very stylized and well-decorated

bfman

I had a couple of happy hour drinks, choosing the classics like the Manhattan and Old Fashioned. These were reasonably good and the $5 price tag didn’t hurt.

empanadas

empanadas

Bigfoot doesn’t have food per se but you can order empanadas that get deliver hot. Very hot! Watch out for that first couple of bites. I got the beef which was reasonably satisfying and not a bad companion to my old fashioned.

wall of whiskey

wall of whiskey

Bigfoot claims to have over 100 whiskies. Maybe next year’s goal is to try all of them. That’s only one new whiskey a night for a 100 days, right? Totally doable.

bfold

Hey girl…

Guys, this old fashioned is legit.

I’m always a bit surprised how much more fun I have at this location but I think it’s because it’s generally not so crowded when it’s early. Bonus, happy hour is daily from 5-9 PM. Those $5 Manhattans and Old Fashioneds are $12 after 9 PM.

MCC: Diageo World Class 2012

Standard

Peter Dorelli, The Savoy London

At the recent Manhattan Cocktail Classic, I was invited to attend the Diageo World Class Happy Hour which happened nightly for 3 nights of the Industry Invitational. For the first time, the United States was invited to compete in the international bartending competition. Tanqueray Gin Global Ambassador Angus Winchester and Peter Dorelli of the Savoy London were on hand to explain the contest. They asked American bartenders to participate by submitting a video of themselves. From the submissions, 20 were chosen to compete. The US finals took place this past Tuesday in New York. Portland, OR bartender Ricky Gomez will represent the United States in the World Class competition in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Dorelli will judge that competition along with Salvatore Calabrese and Dale De Groff in July.

Tony Abou-Ganim

At the happy hour, the 2010 World Class winner Erik Lorincz bartended along with other notables including Tony Abou-Ganim (Las Vegas), Sean Kenyon (Denver) and Ezra Pattek (Miami).

Ezra Pattek

There were four themed rounds. The following are the winners:

  • Classics with a Twist: Nathan Burdette, Cleveland (judged by Jim Meehan and David Nepove)
  • Spice Market: James Menite, Brooklyn (judged by Julie Reiner)
  • Food Pairing: Sother Teague, Brooklyn (judged by Steve Olson)
  • Ritual Theatre: Steve Schneider, NYC (judged by Tony Abou-Ganim)Overall Winner: Ricky Gomez, Portland

Bulleit Old Fashioned by Peter Dorelli

I’m pretty excited for Ricky. I met him at last year’s Portland Cocktail Week and he put on a great show at the Bon Vivants’ Triple Buck competition. Here’s the video. I think he has the showmanship to represent America.

Michael’s Santa Monica: The Dominicano, A Negroni Variation

Standard

the bar at Michael's Santa Monica

About six seats face the small bar at Michael’s Santa Monica. There is more seating by way of the lounge and high top tables but my focus has and always been on a bar stool. I like to see the action.

Michael’s launched the new mixology program last Spring. I don’t get out to the Westside often enough so I haven’t seen the evolution of this bar but I’ve heard good things. I’ve been for special cocktail nights however.

I arrived intending on a drink or two before dinner nearby. A friend met me and while I waited for him, I perused the short happy hour list of just three cocktails. The full cocktail list would have to wait for another night. I chose the most expensive happy hour cocktail, the Dominicano ($8). I saw right away it was a Negroni variation (gin, Campari, sweet vermouth). I’ve been drinking a lot of Negronis lately, perfecting my cocktail at home.

The Dominicano

At Michael’s, the Dominicano is Citadelle gin, Dolin blanc, Dolin rouge, Aperol and orange bitters. The mixologist Jason Robey had just left or I would have asked him why he chose to use two vermouths in this drink. It was very nice and I liked the addition of orange bitters.

gin rickey

I had time for a quick highball. I opted for the Rickey with gin ($6). I watched them squeeze fresh lime and it was surprisingly really good. Sometimes I forget how great a simple drink is.

I did also taste my friend’s the 15th State ($7- Maker’s Mark, black pepper-ginger simple syrup, lime). It was very refreshing.

I’m encouraged to come back to try the other cocktails from the main list. There are two cocktails that are $18 which makes me wonder if they could possibly be worth it.

Apple Blush- Noah’s Mill bourbon, Meyer lemon, aged cinnamon simple syrup, Fuji apple, cranberry-pomegranate reduction

Vera Cruz Cocktail- Chinaco anejo tequila, Fair Trade Kafe liqueur, Aperol, seasonal orange juice, Aztec chocolate bitters

There are also two $16 cocktails.

Borracha Remolacha- Revolucion reposado tequila, Del Maguey Mezcal Vida, agave, lime, beet juice, orange biters

Wilbur’s Nemesis- Maker’s Mark bacon reduction, Leopold Bros’ apple whiskey, Bulleit rye, Dolin Rouge, Angostura bitters, torched applewood smoked bacon

These two sounded very interesting to me. Mezcal cocktails are so hot right now.

The rest of the list ranges from $11 and up. It’s very neat to see how this list is so foodie-driven, so seasonal. I’m sure it’ll change in the next few weeks depending on what’s available at the farmers’ markets though we are lucky that a lot of great produce is available year round. Something that has herbs like cilantro and basil would be easy to replicate every month.

I’ll be back!

New Holiday Cocktails at Border Grill

Standard

Border Grill not only rolled out its new holiday cocktails recently, it launched their handcrafted seasonal cocktail program at the Downtown Los Angeles location. The “Two Hot Tamales” and Top Chef Masters alums, Chefs Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken have always been committed to fresh, local and sustainable ingredients. With this respect to the environment, it’s not a big leap to add a seasonal cocktail menu. It is planned to change this menu about every two months but not to worry, your favorite Border Grill margaritas, mojitos and sangria will always be available.

I was invited last week to check out the new list.

For the holidays, the Cranhattan with Herradura Anejo tequila, fresh cranberry puree, cranberry syrup and house-made brandied cranberries is Cantinero (bartender) Alexander Fazio’s rendition of a tequila Manhattan. He and bar manager Mary King explained the house-made brandied cranberries was this cocktail’s special touch. It’s very light and some would say would go down too easy. I say the lightness means you could have one or two and then head to the mistletoe!

cheese, mango, avocado

I love that the brandied cranberries also showed up on this simple plate of cheese, mango and avocado for us to snack on while we continued to explore the cocktail menu.

quinoa fritters

I’ve had these quinoa fritters from various food festivals around town from the Border Grill truck. How nice they made it to the brick and mortar menu.

Next up is the Otra Vez with Corralejo Reposado tequila, yerba mate tea, mint, agave and lemon. This was the perfect cocktail for sipping and to pair with food.

avocado tacos

beet tacos

Border Grill also sent out some vegetarian tacos including the avocado tacos that are only $3 during happy hour (or $8 for 3). We also beet tacos that aren’t normally on the menu. Happy Hour by the way is every day! Monday through Fridays (4-8 PM), reverse happy hour on Friday and Saturdays (9-11 PM) and all night on Sunday (4-9P).

Pumpkin is surely the King of all squashes so this cocktail, the King of Squash features Herradura Anejo tequila, pumpkin syrup, mezcal mist garnished with rosemary and candied ginger. Lovers of pumpkin will enjoy this smoothly sweet cocktail.

The Cantina at Border Grill

plantain empanadas

I would almost recommend the plantain empanadas for dessert. With just a touch of sweetness, these emapanadas are actually a bit savory with black beans, poblano and cotija cheese. Or just go with the churro tots.

Marco Pisco

My next favorite cocktail was the Marco Pisco. The Oro Pisco quebranta was mixed with green apple puree, coconut milk, cinnamon and chocolate bitters. The froth comes from the coconut milk foam. It’s probably the most “molecular” of all the cocktails but at the same time, still accessible.

The Kumquat Caipirinha features Leblon cachaca, fresh kumquat puree, agave and thyme.

With a nod to the Nutcracker and the holiday season, this Sloe Sugarplum Fizz is made with Sloe Plymouth gin, holiday plum, lemon and soda. Although sugar is in its name, it’s quite a tart and refreshing drink.

Cantinero's Creation

The cantinero’s creation changes weekly and can be served as a shot ($6) or a cocktail. This particular one was a bit sweet for me so I actually would like it as a cocktail, perhaps topped with soda or ginger.

These cocktails will be available through mid-January and for now are only at the Downtown LA location.

All holiday cocktails are $13.

A Cocktailian Walks Into a Sports Bar…

Standard

gin martini

I wanted to check out Bar | Kitchen’s Social Sunday but they were unfortunately closed due to extenuating circumstances. Since I had plans at LA Live later, I decided to check out Riordan’s Tavern. I was happy to see it was happy hour (every day from 3-6PM) and my martini was only $5. When the bartender asked vodka or gin, he seemed surprised I wanted gin. And then I was surprised it was a good one. Icy cold, swimming in botanicals. I should have asked what gin they used as their well. I didn’t look when the bartender made it. Did he shake or stir? It seems stirred which is how I like martinis. Perhaps I should have gotten a twist (to better complement those botanicals) but I was feeling snacky. Olives, then.

Usually when I walk into a new bar, I like to find a seat at the bar. There were a group of guys taking up a corner then a few open seats closer to the grill area. I found it a bit odd to see how small the bar was for a place called a tavern. I opted to sit in front of the grill rather than smushed into a corner and the wall. It was hot. I had an unintentional facial.

Being by myself, it’s easy to blend in and listen to the bar talk. The bartender handed me off to a cocktail server who didn’t know what a Snakebite was (it was on their happy hour menu- Harp & cider). She was bubbly, sweet and told me she couldn’t wait for a glass of wine soon. I liked her.

A few days ago, I read this great article on Shake Stir on how to drink like a lady at a bar. There were 10 rules which I mostly agree with. But I’d like to get to #9- no texting. The article talks about how being on your phone makes you look insecure or bored. True, it can. But like the person eating by themselves at a restaurant with a book, I really don’t see anything wrong if- this is a big IF– you’re in for a meal or drink by yourself. Meaning you’re not there to pick up anyone. I also know it’s not the bartender’s job to entertain me every 5 seconds. There’s only so much interaction you’re going to have, especially if the bar is slammed. And those guys in the corner? No, not happening.

On this early evening, I couldn’t help but overhear one of them didn’t like Jameson. That’s fine. But Riordan’s Tavern is an Irish bar. Well, ostensibly Irish. They seemed to have more Scotch than Irish whiskey but I digress. Then he said something that made me want to throw something. He liked fruity vodka and in fact didn’t like the taste of booze. Hello, still drinking the gin martini.

See this cell phone? I’m tweeting about you.

Fine, fine, I shouldn’t judge.

Back to the article, I actually think it’s easier for men to approach women if they have an “excuse.” Such as asking about her book. Or what apps she had on her cell phone. Yes, I’ve seen this happen.  Sitting around, drinking without seemingly something to do makes people wonder about you but I think perhaps negatively. It’s not often you see a woman alone at a bar. Unfortunately some may think she’s an alcoholic or “working.”

Oh, maybe that’s just me. Perhaps everyone thinks you’re empowered, that you love hanging out by yourself and you want to make new friends.

The reviews are rather poor for this bar. Complaints of service, food and pricing seem to crop up over and over again. I have no complaints. For that brief hour, it was fascinating to watch a slice of life at a sports bar. The bartender seemed to love to delegate duties. He even asked a line cook to make a Long Island iced tea (oh, it’s one of those types of bars). A trio appeared next to me. The women wanted Bud Light which the bar didn’t carry. They made do with Miller Light. I was a bit disappointed of their choice. But I had to remind myself where I was.

I was once told every bar has its time and place. On this non-busy Sunday afternoon, this bar was there for me.

Cheers!
