Manhattan Beach: New Drinks at MB Post

King Philip

King Philip

MB Post in Manhattan Beach is still going strong with the cocktails. They just released a new menu with choices for every type of drinker.

As with previous drinks, MB Post takes classics and gives their spin on the drinks. For instance, the King’s Philip’s Bounty is their version of a mojito. It’s quite perfect for the beach.

King Philip’s Bounty – Starr rum, blood orange, mint, lime, tarragon

The Alibi

The Alibi

MB Post takes on Jacques Bezuidenhout’s La Perla with their version called the Alibi. Sotol gets used instead of tequila and I suspect the vanilla and nutmeg is added to round out sotol’s natural grassy flavor.

The Alibi – Hacienda de Chihuahua sotol, pear, vanilla, sherry, nutmeg

Revenge

Pirate Ship: Revenge

For a good rendition of a Dark and Stormy, try the Pirate Ship: Revenge. The quince and maple were delightful in the refreshing drink.

Pirate Ship: Revenge – Gosling’s black seal rum, quince, maple, ginger

Pushing Daisies

Pushing Daisies

Pushing Daisies from the brunch menu makes a star appearance on the new cocktail list. The French 75 like drink recalls a time where cognac was used instead of the now favored gin. MB Post uses armagnac (like cognac but some like it even better). I enjoyed the black pepper and rose in this one. It’s the perfect bubbles drink before dinner.

Pushing Daisies – Tariquet VSOP armagnac, bubbles, grapefruit, rose, black pepper

Long shanks

Longshanks

One of the amazing “new classic” drinks is a Penicillin. Usually with two types of Scotch and honey, MB Post pays homage to California’s farmers’ market bounty by introducing Scotch to beets. The amazingly colored drink is rich without being heavy.

Longshanks – Compass Box Oak Cross blended Scotch whiskey, beet, honey, lemon, thyme

Ivan

Ivan Drago

Moscow Mules have made a come back but I like the Ivan Drago which takes it to the next level with an intriguing lemongrass flavor. Plus the boba in the drink are fun.

Ivan Drago – Boyd & Blair vodka, ginger, lime, lemongrass, boba

Dr. No

Dr. No

The drink that excited the drink nerd in me was the Dr. No, a gin sazarac. The original sazarac featured Sazarac cognac brandy. It’s no longer made or distributed so Americans in New Orleans where the drink was first concocted substituted with the very American rye whiskey, some spelling it a zazarack. Now we’re only twisting the tradition further with gin.

Dr. No – No. 3 gin, absinthe, lemon, rhubarb, Peychaud’s bitters

Bishop

Smoking Bishop

The warm Smoking Bishop is a take on glogg. The mulled pinot noir is combined with bourbon and spices. It’s a cozy drink to end the evening.

Smoking Bishop – Buffalo Trace bourbon, mulled pinot noir, clove, allspice, rose
