Culver City: Bespoke Cocktails at Oldfield’s Liquor Bar

Standard
The Delicious Sour

The Delicious Sour

Last year, I checked out Oldfield’s Liquor Bar and knew I had to return for a visit — and sit at the bar. And after I tasted Robin Jackson’s Auchentoshan Triple Threat punch, I knew I had to plant myself in front of her bar.

It’s funny because I had met a bar owner from Dallas at the 2011 Portland Cocktail Week and he texted me I needed to go meet Robin after he met her at last year’s Portland Cocktail Week (which sadly I couldn’t attend). It took me a while but I finally did meet her officially this evening when I visited Oldfield’s.

She asked what I wanted and I was in a mood for a sour. She came up with The Delicious Sour (applejack, peach liqueur, lime, egg white). And it was delicious. It was a nice way to ease into the evening after cocktails at Caulfield’s and the neighboring Bigfoot West.

Cigar Box

Cigar Box

Next I asked what she was working on. And then I noticed she had Amaro Braulio which is one of my new favorite amari. She gave me her Cigar Box (Black Grouse, Mezcal, Amaro Braulio, orange bitters). Black Grouse Scotch is smokier than Famous Grouse and if you don’t like the peaty stuff, this may not be for you. But I do like that smokiness and with a bit of mezcal, this was a serious drink. It was done old fashioned style.

Pisco Punch

Pisco Punch

To end, I went back to something lighter and asked for pisco. She made a pisco punch for one with her own pineapple gomme syrup.

Oldfield’s was just as loud this evening when I first went but somehow it was better sitting at the bar. It’s still my preferred way to explore the menu and cocktails at a cool bar.

Next time, I’ll just have to go earlier in the evening.

Culver City: Happy Hour at Bigfoot West

Standard
Bigfoot Lodge West

Bigfoot West

Bigfoot West is one of those places I’ve been to a bunch but just never got around to writing about.  I’ve also been to their Eastside sister bar, Bigfoot Lodge, a bunch as well. It’s always reliable for happy hour and at Bigfoot West, you can even order empanadas from the bar until about 8:15 or so.

Several years ago, there was a movie with Jim Carrey and Zooey Deschanel called Yes Man. There’s a scene at Bigfoot Lodge. Rumor has it, a set was built imitating the bar and when the movie shoot was done, they turned the fake Bigfoot into Bigfoot West. Is it meta or is it genius and the ultimate use of reusing materials? Either way, Bigfoot West seems bigger, very stylized and well-decorated

bfman

I had a couple of happy hour drinks, choosing the classics like the Manhattan and Old Fashioned. These were reasonably good and the $5 price tag didn’t hurt.

empanadas

empanadas

Bigfoot doesn’t have food per se but you can order empanadas that get deliver hot. Very hot! Watch out for that first couple of bites. I got the beef which was reasonably satisfying and not a bad companion to my old fashioned.

wall of whiskey

wall of whiskey

Bigfoot claims to have over 100 whiskies. Maybe next year’s goal is to try all of them. That’s only one new whiskey a night for a 100 days, right? Totally doable.

Hey girl…

Guys, this old fashioned is legit.

I’m always a bit surprised how much more fun I have at this location but I think it’s because it’s generally not so crowded when it’s early. Bonus, happy hour is daily from 5-9 PM. Those $5 Manhattans and Old Fashioneds are $12 after 9 PM.

New Winter Cocktails at Drago Centro for 2013

Standard

Drago Centro crew- Head Bartender Jaymee Mandeville second from the left

I’m not sure when summer left because it barely seemed like it was autumn around here. And now it’s officially winter. With that in mind, Drago Centro launched their new Winter cocktails with just a few days left in year. I’ll be sipping on these into 2013.

Pictured above is Jaymee Mandeville with her Drago Centro bartenders team. On the left of Jaymee is Nathan Burdette who was guest bartending that evening. He is from Ohio. He also made most of our cocktails for our tasting.

Black Leaf

Black Leaf

BLACK LEAF -Templeton rye, concord grape shrub, Pierre Ferrand dry curacao

Jaymee explained curacao  has been around for a while but it’s great to find a less sweet one. Pierre Ferrand makes a dry curacao she enjoyed using in the Black Leaf cocktail. I’ve been seeing a lot of grapes in fall cocktails and I’m sure that’s when Jaymee made her concord grape shrub. She’s been making shrubs long before it was trendy to have them in cocktails.

Naked in the Woods

Naked in the Woods

NAKED IN THE WOODS – St. George Terroir gin, kiwi/mint infused Dolin blanc, lemon bitters, St. George absinthe

One of my favorites on the menu is Naked in the Woods featuring my fave St. George Terroir gin (shhh, I like Dry Rye and Bontanivore gins as well).  I didn’t get that much of the kiwi and mint in the infused Dolin blanc vermouth but that sneaky St. George absinthe did throw me off a bit. Good thing the lemon bitters keeps it balanced.

Sea Loch

Sea Loch

SEA LOCH – Bank Note Scotch, Cynar, Miracle Mile sour cherry bitters, yuzu soda

Got Scotch? Jaymee makes this one easy sipper with an unexpected citrus soda, yuzu. I think this is a great drink that transitions us from warm summery Cali nights to our “freezing” winter ones.

Growing Roots

Growing Roots

GROWING ROOTS – Campo de Encanto pisco, beet juice, Miracle Mile pho bitters, lime, Fever Tree ginger beer

Miracle Mile pho bitters

Miracle Mile pho bitters

I was pleased to try the Miracle Mile pho bitters on their own. Imagine getting down to the very bottom of a stockpot and sipping on the last few dregs. Now imagine that as bitters. These are perfect in a savory cocktail like Jaymee has done with the Growing Roots. Her beet cocktail, Morning Courage, from last Winter’s list is still one of my favorite beet cocktails. And I’m glad to see her new beet cocktail, Growing Roots, make an appearance. This one is lighter because of the ginger beer but still wonderful.

Coquettish Angel

Coquettish Angel

COQUETTISH ANGEL – Pierde Almas mezcal, Boudier Parfait Amour, Amaro Meletti, lemon, egg white, Miracle Mile chocolate chili bitters

Mezcal, Meletti and egg white? What a great combo. Coquettish Angel was one of my faves.

Bra

Bronzeado de Sol

BRONZEADO DE SOL – Novo Fogo aged cachaca, Petite Canne syrup, Bitter Truth Creole bitters, cinnamon/espresso tincture

I first tasted the aged Novo Fogo a few months back and I thought it was great on its own. In this cocktail, Jaymee adds her cinnamon-espresso tincture which gives it some spicyness along with the Creole bitters. Overall it was a bit sweet for me but as it mellowed out, I was able to sip on it. I thought about having it on the rocks next time.

Kissing Cousins

Kissing Cousins

KISSING COUSINS – Nolet’s dry silver gin, housemade rose vermouth, Yellow Chartreuse, Fee Bros. grapefruit bitters, Scrappy’s lime bitters

Kissing Cousin’s is Jaymee’s version of the classic Bijou cocktail (gin, sweet vermouth and Green Chartreuse). For hers, she switches out the green for yellow Chartreuse and adds bitters. She also made her own vermouth. I recently talked about making your own vermouth and in particular gave a recipe for rose vermouth.

I quite liked her variation and can see why she went with the softer yellow to give the vermouth a place to shine.

Soul

Soul of Mayahuel

SOUL OF MAYAHUEL — Casa Noble reposado, sage/black peppercorn infused agave, orange blossom water, hot water, brown butter foam

For an Italian restaurant, brown butter and sage seems perfectly natural. And I’m sure that must have been the starting point when Jaymee came up with this divine hot drink. It’s like a hot buttered rum but instead of rum, you have Casa Noble reposado. This was my favorite cocktail of the new cocktails. I’ll be sipping on this tomorrow. And probably up until Spring.

There are also two other drinks on the new cocktail list that I didn’t try. Vodka lovers will go for the WINTER BUSHEL (Karlsson’s gold vodka, apple/dill shrub, St. Elizabeth’s all-spice pimento dram, lemon juice, Bar Keep baked apple bitters) and those who love bubbles should try the MARCH HARE (Oxley gin, Solerno, Schizandra tea foam, rose water, Prosecco).

New Summer Cocktails at Drago Centro

Standard

The Modern Botanist

It’s no secret that I love Drago Centro. It’s great Italian food, fabulous cocktails and home of the all day and night happy hour. It’s pretty much my second home, if not my office. For the past three launches, I’ve done what I call my office hours on launch night. Instead of the usual $12 a cocktail, they’re only $8. While I loved the Spring (and Winter) cocktails from bar manager Jaymee Mandeville, I was ready for summer.

Last week, I tried my hardest to get through the list of  9 new cocktails but managed to taste 6. I’ll have to go back for the whiskey cocktails.

Twist and Shout

I started off with the Modern Botanist as I love St. George Gins. The Modern Botanist (St. George Botanivore Gin, Byrrh, Lemon, Mint, Raspberry White Pepper Soda) was as expected very refreshing and perfect for the patio where I was holding my office hours.

I was thinking of the Twist and Shout (Casa Noble Reposado, Hibiscus Lavender Tea, Lime, Agave, Hellfire Bitters, Mexican Papaya, Cilantro) next but ended up getting Down the Rabbit Hole (Novo Fogo Cachaca, Dimmi, Poppy Seed Ginger Syrup, Blackberries, Kiwi, Lime, Sage, Parfait Amour Foam) next. My friend had the Twist and Shout and I would say it’s more for an advance drinker (aka me). She much preferred her next drink, the Summer Dalliance.

Down the Rabbit Hole

The Down the Rabbit Hole is also a wonderful summer cocktail. I loved the sage leaves that were propped up to look like bunny ears. Although one of mine fell, it actually reminded me of what bunny ears can do- flop around!

Freshly Cut

Vodka and celery lovers will enjoy the Freshly Cut (Karlsson’s Vodka, Celery Juice, Lime Juice, Honeydew, Lime, Cucumber, Basil, Yuzu Bitters, Miracle Mile Candy Cap Mushroom Bitters). Jaymee usually has a version of a Bloody Mary (usually without tomato!) on her lists and this is it. With all those green elements, you can think of this as a detox cocktail. Well, except for the vodka in it. But still, it’s really a great “spa” cocktail.

Summer Dalliance

As mentioned, the Summer Dalliance (Nolet’s Gin, St. George Absinthe, Lemon, Crème De Violette, Bing Cherries, Prosecco) made quite the impression. The fruity gin played well with the St. George absinthe. It was subtle and I suspect the most dangerous cocktail on the list. Bubbles, gin and absinthe, look out!

White Picket Fence

My final drink this night was the White Picket Fence (Laird’s Apple Brandy, Peach Puree, Schizandra White Tea, Lemon, Egg White, Miracle Mile Forbidden Bitters). I loved Jaymee’s light prosecco cocktail, Shotgun Wedding the last season and thought this was the natural progression. I joked with her I expected to see 2.5 Kids and a Dog on the Fall list in a few months.

American Cherub

Although I picture the American Cherub above, I didn’t actually taste it. I snapped this pic from a then stranger (hey, I made a friend at the bar). He said he liked it very much. I will try it the next time I’m in since I love bourbon. And I’m curious about Jaymee’s strawberry shrub. I also would like to try the Don’t Be Square with grappa and Templeton rye as well as the Jet Setter. I didn’t ask Jaymee about the Jet Setter other than what Fair Cafe (coffee liqueur) is but it makes me think of Mike Prasad  of the next MXLGY who is quite the traveler and loves Licor 43.

American Cherub – Buffalo Trace Bourbon, Lillet Rose, Strawberry Shrub, Cherry Tomatoes, Toasted Fennel Tincture

Don’t Be Square -Poli Miele Grappa, Templeton Rye, Benedectine, Rock Sake, Creole Bitters

Jet Setter – Famous Grouse Scotch, Truffle Honey Syrup, Licor 43, Lime, Fair Café

Did I say I went last week? It’s time to check out my home, er, office, er, you know, Drago Centro.

MCC: Diageo World Class 2012

Standard

Peter Dorelli, The Savoy London

At the recent Manhattan Cocktail Classic, I was invited to attend the Diageo World Class Happy Hour which happened nightly for 3 nights of the Industry Invitational. For the first time, the United States was invited to compete in the international bartending competition. Tanqueray Gin Global Ambassador Angus Winchester and Peter Dorelli of the Savoy London were on hand to explain the contest. They asked American bartenders to participate by submitting a video of themselves. From the submissions, 20 were chosen to compete. The US finals took place this past Tuesday in New York. Portland, OR bartender Ricky Gomez will represent the United States in the World Class competition in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Dorelli will judge that competition along with Salvatore Calabrese and Dale De Groff in July.

Tony Abou-Ganim

At the happy hour, the 2010 World Class winner Erik Lorincz bartended along with other notables including Tony Abou-Ganim (Las Vegas), Sean Kenyon (Denver) and Ezra Pattek (Miami).

Ezra Pattek

There were four themed rounds. The following are the winners:

  • Classics with a Twist: Nathan Burdette, Cleveland (judged by Jim Meehan and David Nepove)
  • Spice Market: James Menite, Brooklyn (judged by Julie Reiner)
  • Food Pairing: Sother Teague, Brooklyn (judged by Steve Olson)
  • Ritual Theatre: Steve Schneider, NYC (judged by Tony Abou-Ganim)Overall Winner: Ricky Gomez, Portland

Bulleit Old Fashioned by Peter Dorelli

I’m pretty excited for Ricky. I met him at last year’s Portland Cocktail Week and he put on a great show at the Bon Vivants’ Triple Buck competition. Here’s the video. I think he has the showmanship to represent America.

MCC: Introducing Sorel

Standard

Columbia & Congress

One of the exciting new products I tried at Manhattan Cocktail Classic was Sorel, a hibiscus liqueur produced by Jack from Brooklyn. I first tried it at the Gala and then at Brooklyn Day, one of the themed days of the Industry Invitational. Over 15 vendors from Brooklyn came together at the Andaz 5th Avenue including Sorel.

I was immediately reminded of Ribena, a black current syrup used to make drinks. Take care though not to confuse the two. Sorel is mixed with not only Nigerian ginger, Indonesian cassia and Brazilian clove, it contains 100% New York grain alcohol. It’s 15% alcohol.

Guests got to try four cocktails. I tasted two including the Columbia & Congress and Flor de Fuego.

Flor de Fuego

The cocktails were created by bartenders from Brooklyn bars Huckleberry and Jakewalk. Sorel is a versatile liqueur. It could be treated as a modifier or enjoyed straight, hot or cold.

I particularly liked the Flor de Fuego and liked the punch of tartness from the Columbia & Congress.

Flor de Fuego – created by Michael Dulle of Jakewalk

  • 1 oz Sorel
  • 1/2 oz El Buho Mezcal
  • 3/4 oz Laird’s Applejack Bonded, 100 Proof
  • 3/4 oz Dolin Blanc
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters

Stir, strain into ice-filled rocks glass, lemon twist to garnish.

Columbia & Congress - created by Michael Dulle of Jakewalk

  • 1-1/2 oz Flor de Cana
  • 1 oz. Sorel
  • 1/4 oz lime juice
  • 1/4 oz simple syrup

Shake, strain into coupe, garnish with a lime wheel.

God Save the Queen – created by Juan Castillo of Huckleberry

  • 1-1/2 oz. Brooklyn Gin
  • 3/4 oz. Sorel
  • 3/4 oz. lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz. Cocchi Americano

Shake, strain into a coupe, garnish with lemon twist.

Punchy’s Tipple - created by Michael Dulle of Jakewalk

  • 1-1/2 oz King’s County distillery Bourbon
  • 1/2 oz. Sorel
  • 1/2 oz. Cointreau
  • 1/2 oz. St. Germain Elderflower

Stir, strain into rocks glass, orange twist expressed (served neat with twist discarded).

Check out more recipes here.

Later I got to try Brooklyn Gin on its own. I quite liked it and am very excited it’s coming to LA soon. I hope Sorel follows soon! I think LA bartenders would have fun using it in drinks, particularly those featuring the bounty from our local farmers’ markets. On the other hand, I could see it in classic cocktails as well. A Sorel Manhattan would be an interesting twist.

MCC: Small Screen Network Happy Hour with Charlotte Voisey

Standard

Charlotte Voisey

At Manhattan Cocktail Classic last month, Small Screen Network hosted three nights of happy hour, each day represented the past, present and future of cocktails. I attended the “past” and “future” happy hours with Charlotte Voisey. Charlotte has a show on Small Screen Network called the Proper Pour.

My favorite was Charlotte’s “futuristic” take on a Boulevardier made with Hudson rye, Aperol and Lillet Rose. Although still boozey, it’s a much lighter version made with the traditional Campari.

If you want to help Small Screen Network, they’re asking everyone to log onto Mission: Small Business and vote for them (log in via Facebook) so they can win a $250,000 grant. Log in via Facebook and do a search for “Small Screen” (business), Washington (State) and Bainbridge Island (city).

A Cuban Manhattan at Charlie Palmer

Standard

Cuban Manhattan

After tasting a couple of drinks from the late night happy hour menu at Charlie Palmer, I spotted Brugal Rum and asked for an Old Fashioned with it. As it turned out, I got a Rum Manhattan instead. The internet gods have decreed this drink a “Cuban Manhattan.” Brugal though is from the Dominican Republic.

I agree with the bartender that this dark rum made a better Manhattan than an Old Fashioned but I wouldn’t have been adverse to one. I told her sometimes I’d get a tequila Manhattan which the internet gods are calling a “Tijuana Manhattan.” Calling these drinks by location reminds me of the freeway signs in LA. You have to know that San Bernadino is to the East and Santa Monica is to the West on the 10 freeway. Cuban = rum, Tijuana = tequila.

Caribbean Sunset

Caribbean Sunset – 10 Cane Rum, Star Anise, Clove, Citrus, Sugar Cane

For a drink with a lot of spices in it, I didn’t get much from this cocktail.

Eno

Eno – George Dickel Tennessee whiskey, orange, ginger infused ginger honey ale

I am afraid I didn’t fare much better with the Eno with its confusing ginger infused ginger honey ale.

So, how do you drink like the Minty? Order something you know you’ll like. It this case, let’s go Cuban Manhattan!
